Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a nose reduction or cosmetic nose reshaping, improves your nose's appearance by altering its shape and size. Dr. Agha's goal for rhinoplasty is to create a very natural look by shaping the nose to fit in seamlessly with the other facial features. Surgery on the nose can also correct an airway obstruction. This type of surgery can be performed as a standalone operation or in conjunction with additional surgery to improve the outward appearance of the nose. Many patients benefit greatly from rhinoplasty or nose reshaping because it enhances their self-esteem.
What makes a good candidate for nose reshaping or rhinoplasty?
Individuals should wait until they are at least 16 or 17 years old before undergoing surgery on their nose. Boys may need to wait longer. Nose surgery is not recommended if the nose has not fully developed. However, there is no age limit, as long as you are in good health to have surgery. Rhinoplasty can be done in combination with other surgeries such as a facelift or other rejuvenation surgery, which helps correct undesirable aging changes that can happen with the nose such as a drooping tip.
You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:
1. the tip of the nasal droops
2. the tip of your nose is enlarged or thick
3. your nasal bridge has a hump
4. your nostrils flare excessively
5. your nose is crooked or off center
6. your nose is too wide
7. your nose is too big for your face
What happens during the rhinoplasty consultation?
During a consultation, the doctor may inquire as to what it is specifically about your nose that you would like to change and improve. Between your concerns and the doctor's professional opinion, the doctor can implement realistic goals for mutually desired results. Individuals are often very happy with the results of their surgery, so long as patients have ample physical and emotional maturity.
What happens during the rhinoplasty procedure?
During the rhinoplasty procedure, the doctor will administer medications so there will be minimal pain or discomfort during the procedure.
The specific techniques used during the surgery depend mostly on the goals you have talked over with your surgeon. In many cases, the incisions are placed inside your nose so they are not visible. If you are getting your nostrils reduced or the base of your nose narrowed, small triangles of skin at your nose's base will be removed. The incisions for this type of procedure are placed in the natural crease where the cheek meets the nostril, so they are hidden.
How is recovery for rhinoplasty?
Recovery for nose surgery takes at least a few days before you may be able to return to work. It is recommended to rest and limit your activities for two or three days following surgery. Sleep with your head elevated as well to help minimize swelling and reduce the risk of minor bleeding. It typically takes about two weeks before you can return to normal activities, including exercise.
Bruising and discoloration are normal. The bruising around the eyes and cheeks are most obvious the first few days following surgery. Significant swelling can last up to two weeks. Minor swelling can last for many months, usually affecting the tip of the nasal, but this should not be very noticeable. Most of the discoloration will go away within one week of surgery.
